специальный код, в котором каждый знак состоит из вертикальных тёмных и светлых полос разной толщины (ширины), печатаемый на упаковке товаров, книгах и т. д. для автоматизированного ввода (оптического считывания) данных о них [в компьютерные системы]. Каждая группа линий штрихового кода представляет собой цифру от нуля до девяти. Имеется несколько систем штрихового кодирования (см. тж. EAN, UPC). Различают штрих-коды фиксированной (EAN-13) и переменной (Code 39, Code 128) длины, коды высокого разрешения (например, с шагом линий менее 100 мкм, high resolution bar code). Существуют круговые штрих-коды, которые можно считывать в любом направлении, одномерные штрих-коды (кодируют данные только по горизонтали, используются в основном для идентификации товаров, при их инвентаризации, транспортировке и других операциях), двумерные штрих-коды (2D bar code) (кодируют данные по горизонтали и по вертикали, поэтому позволяют закодировать больше информации на одинаковой площади) и объёмные (трёхмерные) штрих-коды (3D bar code), позволяющие, например, хранить рекламные видеоданные (видеоролики) размером до 1,8 Мбайт. Современные штриховые коды могут выводиться на экран сотового телефона и считываться прямо с экрана, например при бронировании билетов на спортивные соревнования
